Global Perspective Studies

A Secular Humanities Core for the High School Student

Global Perspective Studies is Simplify’s newest curriculum offering for high school students. This curriculum is a humanities core that covers everything a high school student needs for a full credit in both history and english.

GPS Year 1 is divided in four units. Each unit is 8 weeks, and the four units cover Africa, the Middle East, India, and East Asia. Each unit delves into the history of an area and the literature. In addition we have a literature theme that connects across all four units. This year’s theme is heros.

Our program is academically challenging and rigorous. It was created in mind with 3 goals. They are:

  1. To create strong writers. We want the students who have gone through all four years of GPS to be prepared for college admission essays and academic writing in a college setting. Working through GPS will get them there.
  2. To create strong readers. High school level work should see an increase in both a student’s reading level and ability to analyze the works they read. In choosing the books in GPS we made it a goal to have the students be exposed to books that will call on them to grow as a reader and as a person and books that will help prepare them for college level work when the time comes.
  3. To create globally minded students. Our final goal of this curriculum is to pull students into the 21st century. We wanted a strong history program that is not  just American or Western European focused but globally focused. A curriculum that exposes students to stories from around the world, to perspectives that differ from their own. This decision influenced our starting point for GPS and our plan for the next 3 years.
