Shannon Beck is an educational consultant and homeschool coach who has been forging a unique path through the homeschooling jungle with her kids for seven years. She moderates and manages several state and national online homeschool support groups and enjoys helping families find the educational path that works best for them.
Shannon received her bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University in Communications, specializing in Public Relations. Her exposure to an untraditional approach in education began in grade school and continued into high school when she attended the local university laboratory schools. She spent her senior year studying abroad as an exchange student in Japan.
Shannon has experience facilitating the educational journey for children with special needs, asynchronous learners, gifted learners, and children who are passionate early in an area of specialty. Her experience allows her to design well rounded course plans which still focus on any part the educational spectrum from STEM courses to Performing Arts. Her approach is one which brings in different styles of classes to find the learning method best suited for each student. To do this, she uses her extensive experience researching educational options. She feels education is an organic process which requires periodic follow up during the school year to reevaluate and, if necessary, adjust the plan to be sure the student's needs are being met. For the student focusing on Performing Arts, Shannon can help plan coursework while navigating auditions, rehearsals and performances.
Shannon is also there to help when times of personal and family upheaval threaten to interfere with a family's ability to continue homeschooling. At some point in time, just about everyone has a moment where something happens to cause them to question if they can continue homeschooling. Be it due to job loss, personal tragedy, a change in the family, or anything else, she will help you evaluate your situation and find the best way to move forward for the student and the family.
Shannon is available to help with the entire college application process. She is able to create homeschool transcripts, and help write course descriptions for college applications. She can help the student with their college search to narrow down the best choices for the student and help create targeted essays for the schools chosen. Another great tool for college bound homeschoolers is a Curriculum Vitae which showcases the student to prospective colleges. Shannon is well versed in creating these and can assist students in taking advantage of this underused tool. With experience navigating Common Application and financial aid process, she can help families reduce the stress of getting everything ready to turn in.
Shannon's homeschooled kids are bookends for the high school years. She has a gifted asynchronous learner just about to head off to college and a performing arts kid just starting high school. She lives in central Illinois with her two boys, her awesome husband, their two cats, and a hedgehog.
